Milliways is crack love.

Natasha, as he sometimes prefers to be called, was originally a French sorcerer in the 12th century, and fell in love with (and married) a young maid named Jolie. Unfortunately, she was killed three years later, the same evening as his adopted father. Jolie became a ghost, and kept him company throughout the centuries, while he became a Franciscan friar and eventually a Dominican monk. When Lucifer decided to corrupt him, he was sent the demoness Lilah, and eventually gave in, controlling and changing a decent chunk of the Inquisition, despite his original protests. He continued to learn magic and became politically powerful through Lilah's meddling. On his deathbed, Lucifer showed up to kill him and eat his soul, more or less, but using a mirror-spell he accidentally killed Lucifer instead.

Lilith guides him through the changeover, and now his professional name is Satan; he looks much as he did when human in his late twenties/early thirties, and he's very powerful. However, for about eight or nine centuries, he doesn't get on very well with the other Incarnations of Immortality, as he is after all the Incarnation of Evil. Eventually, things sort of get worked out, as he falls in love with the Incarnation of Nature, whose professional name is Gaia. When he marries her, he accidentally dies (again), but manages to defeat his (truly evil) successor and reclaim his position about a month later. Not long after, he becomes God's stepfather.

In otherways, things are a bit different.

He never made the deal with Gabriel.

He took - and held - power on Earth.

Eventually, he kicked God out of office for not doing his job, and currently holds both Offices (Good and Evil).

"Natasha" left the bar to plan the final stages of his war on Heaven about a month before the Tutu Incident took place, returning perhaps a month after it to discover that his home for two centuries had changed quite a bit in his absence. This, perhaps understandably, pissed him off quite a bit. And he's not nice when he's pissed off.

(Especially since his plan had been to spend a nice relaxing time at home, since he does think of the bar as home by now, after two hundred and eight years spent as one of its patrons. He even came back in his true form, instead of his "business suit" shall we say. [And oh, the confusions that that has caused.] When he came back in such a manner, with two Offices to hold instead of one, he introduced himself as "Grace" to those he met, both new and old acquaintances alike.)

Of course, he's not nice most of the time, although he does make exceptions on behalf of family - at the moment, namely Nick, David, and Alex, although he's also got an interest in the business of Thom, Alanna, Gwenael, and Moiraine. You hurt them, and you're pissing him off again. You don't want to do that, really.

Another point to make: Remember how it's not considered wise to speak the name of the Devil when you're talking about him, since he's liable to show up, or at least know what you're saying? That holds true, although only when he's in the bar, so if you want to talk trash about him specifically I'd really recommend waiting till he's gone. Or learn to be discreet, and not use one of his names. (Yes, we know he has lots.)
